Change Up With Resistance Bands

We all get to that point with our fitness training when getting a workout in feels “ho-hum”. If your workouts are starting to get stale, resistance bands are a great way to add variety to your routines. Variety keeps workouts fresh and keeps you interested. Resistance bands can be used for virtually any movement that you would perform with free weights or a machine. Bands can provide a challenging full body workout and help you reach your fitness goals.

Let’s look at some of the reasons you should consider resistance bands.

  2. Portable. Fits in any travel bag and you don’t need a lot space to complete a full body workout.
  3. Adds variety. Bands allow the user to work muscles from different angles than traditional cable machines and free weights. Coming at the muscles from different angles forces the muscles to adapt in new ways building strength and stability.
  4. Great for beginner and advanced training.Whether you are new to resistance training or an experienced fitness enthusiast, you can get a great workout with resistance bands. Movements can be modified to increase or decrease the difficulty. Also bands come in different levels of resistance.

There are a couple things you need to know before you start training with resistance bands. First, resistance bands provide tension throughout the entire movement. Free weights use gravity, so you are feeling tension only during a portion of the movement. For instance, during the bicep curl with free weights the tension is greatest on the upward movement or curling up of the arm. On the downward portion of the movement we get less tension. With exercise bands the tension is constant during the movement so you can concentrate on both the lifting and lowering phases of the movement.

Second, make sure your bands are secure during exercises. Whether you are using your feet to secure the band or a door-jam, be sure the band is very secure. The last thing you want is for the band to release and come snapping back. It’s like getting snapped by a giant rubber band. I’ve had this happen and the welt was with me for more than a week.

Last, you can use bands in any direction and still receive the same amount of tension. With free weights, gravity plays against some movements and doesn’t allow us to work some muscles as effectively as with resistance bands. Allowing us to work muscles from different angles, will force the muscle to activate in different ways and increase our stabilization strength.
