Choosing the Right Food Packaging for Your Product

Whether you’ve been in the business for a long time or are just releasing your very first product, flexible packaging is important in the food industry. It’s a combination of having the right graphics, an easy to handle package for consumers, and the right material to keep your goods from going stale. There are a lot of options in snack packaging but if you take a close look at similar products to what you are selling, you’ll get a good idea of where to start.

If you are dealing with snack food like chips, pretzels, or cereals, you are going to want what is known as pillow bags. These are the bags we are used to seeing these sort of loose foods in, where you just rip the top to open. Make sure the material you choose is easy to open; you don’t want consumers struggling to get to your product.

T-seal packages are the small ones you see used for snack and candy bars. So when you are looking for that power bar packaging, these are the ones you want to look into. They are called a T-seal since the edges where the packaging is closed looks like a T.

Stand up pouches are ones with a flat bottom when filled so they can, as the name suggests, stand up. You’ll find trail mix, chips, and chocolate snacks often packaged this way. They often have a resealable lock on them so consumers can be sure they are keeping air out from letting their food go bad.

Once you’ve decided which packaging works best for your product, you’ll need to work on the graphic. Companies who sell food packaging can print it for you and often have in house artists who can help you with a design, if you are stuck. Make sure you ask to what extent they can help with design. You want to be sure to include your company logo and have as eye catching of a package as you can, without it looking too busy. This is the first impression that is going to get someone to stop and look at the product in detail.

Don’t forget to provide accurate nutritional information to be included on the back of the package, as well as any information that may be vital to a person’s purchase. This would include whether or not it’s organic, kosher, or vegan, if it includes any food that people are commonly allergic to, and contact information if there’s ever a problem.

Your packaging is going to be what you show to the entire world and how you are going to entice people to buy. You want to make sure you keep your food fresh and make a great impression!
